Biotechnologies can be defined as technologies intended to change the biological functioning of animals, plants or micro-organisms.

Within animal production, the aim may be to change:

1. What the animals consume - by giving them genetically modified feed and feed additives
2. Existing animals - by giving them hormones and similar substances promoting growth, feed conversion, milk production etc.
3. Future animals - by using reproductive technologies and genetic modifications
